Born in Santa Monica, California, 1958, Starlie Sokol-Hohne enjoys equestrian horseback riding in the woods and canyons near her home. This inspires her in the way that nature is extremely abstract as well as realistic. Using these quiet times helps to rejuvinate the creative powers for even greater expression of self-fulfillment. Fascinated with the grandeur of formal gardens, Sokol-Hohne strives to recreate these lush and rich landscapes by building upon colour copies of actual gardens. Incorporating materials, such as tissue paper, into the work, she creates depth and texture. Her colours evoke a luminious sensuality. The work whisks the viewer into a region reminiscent of a time past when formal gardens were found around every corner.
