Thomas Born grew up in Switzerland where he studied to be a construction mechanic. His artistic career started as a nature photographer whereby he received several national and international awards.
Thomas immigrated to Canada in 1995 and started out building and selling wood furniture. He quickly found more challenging ways to express his creativity through his fascination with metal as a medium integrating it into his designs. Thomas strives to energize his work via the physical exhaustion required to mold the steel with the strength of his own two hands.
Being inspired by nature, Thomas began incorporating predominately reclaimed materials in his sculpture, such as: driftwood, discarded hot water tanks, scrap aluminum, etc.. Other influences include renowned sculptors such as Giacometti, Calder, and Tinguely.
