Ken West depicts Ajax the Great as a gladiator, dressed in the iconic uniforms of a lifeguards’ in red shirt and board shorts along with a plumed battle helmet, bridging together the protectors of the ancient and modern worlds within this one figure. Known for his fearlessness and immense strength, Ajax was true and strong. In this narrative, the figure in the painting is lifted up, literally and metaphorically, as a true hero.
